OPEC makes largest oil production cut in history
Our national security "experts" should have weaned us off of foreign oil back in the 1970s. Its is amazing how much American energy money is turned against us. I'm certainly not a tree hugger, but uh - shouldn't we make it a national security priority to not NEED anyone that hates us?
I'll never forget watching September 11th unfold live while I was at work at an airport in Michigan. I will never forget watching masses of people in countries that we buy oil from CELEBRATE the terrorist acts by jumping up and down in the streets.
Are we STUPID for allowing ourselves to depend on countries like that?
I too agree with your sentiment. But we still don't have a flipping domestic energy policy in this country. When oil goes back up, and it will, we'll wonder why we squandered our opportunity to produce more of our own energy.
And before you tree huggers give me a hard time, I want all sorts of energy produced in THIS country yesterday. Alternative fuels, solar, nuclear....ect

Personally I think it all comes down to electricity. If we have an excess of electricity we can produce just about anything you could want for transportation. At this point I don't think we know which is best, I think left alone the free market will decide, but we need to get the legislators off thier a$$ and approve some of the new power plants which are being stalled by the NIMBY principle.

Short sighted politicians and business "leaders"
Now that oil costs plummeted to where they really should be, most Americans don't care about energy anymore. It was almost impossible to buy a Hybrid vehicle just a few months ago, now nobody cares. I understand that everyone is worried about the economy but now the politicians are only chasing the symptoms of the recession instead of addressing the root causes!!!! Congress is doing what they have always done with major problems - throw more money that we don't have at the symptoms! Do any of them remember (or care enough to do something different) what caused this worldwide economic fiasco? Can you say UNCHECKED GREED in the oil and mortgage industries?
So, we allow ourselves to become dependent on those that hate us (including Hugo Chavez) for energy. Then we allow ourselves to be suckered into a mortgage that we can never pay back. By the way, the word "mortgage" comes from the old French words "mort" (dead) + "gage" (pledge); so called because the deal dies either when the debt is paid or when payment fails. Sound familiar?
So what is the point to this rant? We should all think of the long term consequences of our choices. Why would we accept a job at an airline that is dragging down the industry? Why would we accept a mortgage that we can surely not pay (although some people have legitimate unforseen circumstances)? Why do we complain about energy costs when they are high but not push for change KNOWING FROM HISTORY that they could enslave us again? It only takes a small shock to start an avalanche.
Anyway, I'm not aware of many serious plans to rid us of foreign energy dependence before 2050. This one seems somewhat reasonable though:

Yeah, they buy Citigroup stock and watch it rise......meanwhile the US taxpayers are bailing out Citigroup while they are lending money to Dubai. Go figure...............

It is amazing how quickly this country can slip back into lazy, sleepy complacency. Just a few months ago, America was screaming for energy. While the presidential candidates were bickering over whose paltry energy "plan" was "better", we had one side with only token stale ideas and one side chanting "drill baby drill". Both sides of the aisle amaze me with their lack of vision and foresight.

60 Minutes had a 35minute segment with the Saudi's and their oil business. The guy was not bashful in saying they would like to see the price to be around the $75/barrel mark.

The problem is, if we continue a low consumption, OPEC will cut production again in the effort to try to drive prices upward where OPEC wants them and not where the free market dictates prices should be.
