...and perfect accuracy for the spray and pray crowd. There is some pretty cool stuff out there about Mikhail Kalashnikov, the inventor, apparently a farm boy in the Soviet Union, who went to war, and was jealous at the germans who had automatic weapons that actually worked. Hence he designed the AK-47. With a few failed prototypes before that.

I've always like the Famas because it's the best looking rifle IMO. The problem is there are very few civillian legal versions available so it's rather expensive to buy one. I don't really like the way the Aug looks, but there is a company that makes high quality civillian versions, so I might buy one of those sometime.
As for France:
"The only time France wanted to go to war was when the German Army was sitting in Paris sipping coffee."

Had a chance to shoot a FAMAS, it is an interesting set up and all in all a weird gun... the receiver is kinda housed in plastic and it uses a "lever" delayed blow-back. It didn't strike me as too solid of a weapon, it wouldn't be my first choice.. but it was pretty accurate if you can get used those sights.
personally I think the SA58 is one of the better rifles out there...either that or a gas-piston AR style

At SHOT show 93' I had the opportunity to meet Mikhail Kalashnikov and Eugene Stoner. I was interested, along with a few friends, in ordering a special version of the Stoner SR-25, from Knight's Armament. Reed Knight invited us to come back later for a special treat. We met the two most influential weapons designers of the last 60 years. His English was minimal, and my Russian nil, but we did get pictures with them. We also got SR-25's out of the lot of rifles going to Ft. Bragg for initial testing. Quite ablack rifle day!

pretty sure that's not an AK-74.... rather a RPK
Modern Firearms - Kalashnikov RPK light machine gun
AK-74 has a very distinctive muzzle device as well as generally different magazines...not to mention uses the 5.45mm instead of the typical AKM,AK47,RPK 7.62X39mm round
Modern Firearms - Kalashnikov AK-74, AKS-74 and AK-74M assault rifles
