Jesus....if I wanted to be preached to I would have gone to church this week.

Second.... while I feel for you personal experiences.... ( having had some of the same ) .... everyone must be responsible for themselves. Hell I know 17 people personally who died in aircraft accidents.... many more lives effected than by alcohol...using your logic I should stop flying..... YES I am being sarcastic.... I frankly I dont dispute ANY of your arguements... BUT this is the last place I want to be preached at about this sorta thing.

And as someone above said..... ( and I havent had more than 1 drink in a 24 hour period in 16 years ) some of the best time of my life were drinking with my crews in all sort of foreign lands...

Good night.

Wow.
I understand that many people think that drinking is a stress reliever. I can enjoy A drink also, but I am responsible about it. Some alcohol is enjoyable in moderation, but why waste your life getting drunk? I used to party hard and I even "won" several drinking contests. (Wow, I should have been so proud.)
But then one day about 45 minutes after 18 shots of Jack Daniels in a 10 minute contest, I had an epiphany! As I bowed before the porcelain throne of a college dorm bathroom and my insides were nearly rejected, I thought, "Why am I here? Is this supposed to be fun? There has to be more to life than this!" That was 13 years ago.
Well, there IS too much to life to waste away in a drunken stupor. Pilots are supposed to be known for good judgment. Why would I ever put myself in a position where my judgment is compromised?
We all had basic training on aeromedical factors. Remember a little thing called hystotoxic hypoxia? Remember a little detail from high school health class called alcohol poisoning? Getting drunk overloads your liver, kills brain cells, and lowers inhibitions.
Life is too precious. There are better ways to have fun - fun that doesn't ruin your life, the lives of those who love you, or the lives of anyone else.
I am sorry about your mother and your friend. Alcohol affects lives in ways that are hard to believe.

There is an answer for those whose lives have been affected, it's Al-A-Non. Alcoholics Anonymous for those that can't seem to quit drinking, but want to.

Many folks that drink cannot seem to metabolize the alcohol very well, others, it seems they can do okay. Go figure.

There are a lot of pilots that have a drinking problem. They have tried to stop and can't. It can be scary. The thought of losing your job, family or friends or accidentally killing yourself or someone is too much to bear. You'd be surprised to know that pilots have quit drinking and live and work full lives.

Here is a link if anyone is curious if they might have a drinking problem or want to know more about Al-A-Non:

Alcoholics Anonymous : Is A.A. For You?

If anyone wants to know more, PM me!

Here's the result of someone who couldn't handle their booze. My neighbor died in that mess. Makes you think, when you know someone.

I think we all probably know someone who was affected by a drunk driver and that is very unfortunate. As I look back at life and think of all the money that I have spent on drinking and drinking related activities I could probably pay cash for a new car. That new car would look pretty in the garage, but I don't think it would bring a percent of the memories all those drunken nights have. Since I am a responsible and always get a DD, cab, or the shoe leather express I will continue to wake up in the morning look into the wallet and wonder exactly how I spent that much money again!!!

I love all of these responses that justify heavy drinking...."that's a bad picture and all,and were all affected by drunk driving, but i'm sure glad I have those memories of getting drunk with my buddies." Before you lay into me, I went to the #1 party school in the country (at that time), and I had alot to do with it! But when you get in your thirties, time to grow up.

I couldn't have said it any better. There are many types of behaviors that are way more dangerous than drinking. Regardless, with a little responsibility, you can have your fun and be safe too.
