Are you going to Colorado or Utah? Or another state for that matter. If you are going to Colorado, I recommend the Arkansas river over the Colorado river, and I recommend a section near Buena Vista called "numbers."

If you're NOT looking for whitewater rafting, ten don't go to Arkansas river, especially the numbers.

Go to the Green River in Utah. Check out this site. It is some of the most beautiful country in the world. I am from Utah, so I am a bit biased but I think you would like it

Thanks for the great suggestions! How about the Grand Canyon --- anyone have a recommendation for those raft trips?

I vote for the New and the Gauley. Both are good times where you WILL paddle and get wet.

yea, a great alternative, best on the east coast by far. The New river is best around the beginning of July end of June, and the Gauley is mostly a fall season river ( i think ).

For the grand canyone proper...

DITY trips are tightly controlled by permit, I think there might even be a lottery or a very long waiting list. Check with the park service for that.

Guided trips are also limited, and would expect at least one year on the wait list.

In '01 I went on a trip with Wilderness River Adventures. This was a small raft trip. Roughly six people per raft, and the river guides used oars to steer it.

I did the trip in July. Way too hot! The consensus of the river guides was the best trip is the last one of the year. As the days are shorter, the full trip is 14 days instead of 12. Also they are allowed to burn driftwood and there are no motored trips that late.

The rules may have changed since.
