Default Not a good policy

Tomgoodman,

Thanks for the reply, but I think that policy is just an accident waiting to happen (and it just did). I think they might want to rethink that one, disarm all when at the gate and arm prior to pushback, sounds like a good procedure.

Looks like Obama learned from the Guyana dude and pulled a slide wanting to be the "first" off an airplane... He forgot they hadn't landed yet

" ...Later, Midwest Airlines said the problem developed because an emergency slide located in the tail cone of the plane deployed in flight and never threatened the safety of the flight... "

I wonder if door slides are stockpiled in African out-stations or did the next flight take a delay?

All doors are disarmed upon arrival at the gate, when the seatbelt sign is turned off. The announcement to "Crosscheck and All Call" is made by the A-line FA, not pilot. (Info courtesy of FA wife.) That said, there are some airplanes which have emergency doors and windows permanently armed. It is also concievable that he rearmed the door prior to opening it. It is not too hard to do, you just have to read the decals.

Done many flights with my last company into Guyana (BWIA), the crew considered the pax in and out of that station the most difficult to deal with. Have had many "experiences" over the 30 odd years going there. Back to the slides....We always disarmed all doors on arrival, and at my new company here in the Middle East we follow the same procedure, I do not turn off the seat belt sign till I see all doors disarmed.

Angry flier uses emergency slide to leave plane - News - MSNBC.com

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - Authorities in Guyana said a first-class airline passenger was so angry at seeing economy passengers leave a jetliner before him that he yanked open an emergency hatch and slid down the chute.
Police say the Guyanese man appeared to be intoxicated after the Delta Airlines flight from New York. Local police arrested the man, but he was quickly released on bail after the Friday incident.
A spokesman for Delta says the carrier plans to file charges against the man for interfering with flight crew members
I was supposed to take this jet back to JFK. They look a little funny with the slide sticking out of the side when there is nothing wrong. I didn't see the incident, but I also heard that he took his luggage down the slide with him. He REALLY wanted off the jet I guess. I'd love to tell you what I DO know about it.. but I don't think it's appropriate at this time.

I think we have every idea what we are getting into. It's a lucrative market, and those people are paying big bucks to fly nonstop from NY. Hauenstein is the best thing that's happened to DAL in a long time. While some of the markets we are flying are rat holes that aren't quite as much fun as a Rome or Moscow layover, they are making money. I've done the trip twice now, and it IS different. We carried 39 members of the same family that were going down. And they brought everything they owned on board as carry on... took an hour to board. Funny actually, but problemmatic. We had zero cargo on board because of all the checked baggage. Paid for in cash too.. the gate agent showed me the roll of benjamins she had collected for the baggage. Damn she was a good card player too... took all MY cash to boot .
