Economy Up when Government Impotent
Historically, when the legislative branch (congress and the senate) are majority controlled by one party and the executive branch (the President) is of a different party, we Americans do generally well.
If you liked the budget surpluses of the mid 90's through 2000, then you may see my point.
Anytime the house and senate came up with a bill, the President vetoed it. Conversely, the President's proposals were shot down by the legislators.
All three have to agree to spend our $ on programs, if any of the three say no - the $s are saved - voila- Budget Surplus.
Yes, it is that simple.
We have had record tax increases and record spending when the house majority, senate majority and President were all Dems (1977-1981, 1993-1995).
Up until after the 2006 elections, we had record tax reductions and record spending when the house majority, senate majority and President were all Repubs (2001-2007).
Look, I know these last two years have not been a walk in the park, however, we've had zero change in federal taxes and many spending programs (with the exception of the tax rebate checks) halted by partisan politics thanks to a divided legislative (Dem majority) and executive (Repub) branch.
