Default A/C purchase buyer's or seller's market?

I am looking at buying a C-172 SP NAVII and have one lined up. Just a number that was thrown out was $140K but when I VREF the plane on AOPA it comes up with $129K it is a 2002 C-172 SP with 3K hours and it will come with a fresh 0 hour rebuilt engine.
I would be buying it from the flight school that I went to and leasing it back to them. I don't want to get into the pros and cons of leaseback. Just trying to get a feel for A/C pricing. Can I haggle a bit with them or is it a sellers market?

What do you stand to lose? Always offer something a good bit less and let them counteroffer. It's not like you are going to be unable to find another Skyhawk if they turn you down. With gas being what it is the piston market will be sagging soon, or already is.

That was sort of my thought. I think that I am going to offer them $120K. They already know that I have the money lined up and am ready to buy. I also told the middle man to have the main guy contact me and that I was ready to buy something in the very near future be it from them or someone else.

It is a buyers market and you are buying a aircraft that has been used as a trainer. You should get it for less, how much depends on who does the engine overhaul. Just go buy a trade a plane and do the research. With the extreme slow down at the airlines, training has almost stopped so trainers will not be used much and a lot more will be for sale. There is also the gas situation.
