I was on short final at BUR one day when the tower came on and in a very excited voice said. "We're abandoning the tower. We're abandoning the tower! All aircraft cleared to land at their own risk!" It was only after I landed that I thought about why I should have gone around. I had no way other than visual to know the condition of the runway. Fortunately, I was in a EMB-110 and didn't use very much runway.

We spent the next few hours flirting with the Flt Attns. at the next gate.

Great story. I would think the Tower should have told you why they were abandoning - so that you could have known "Quake - runway may have a crevice, etc". How did it go with the FA's at the next gate?

They did actually. They said, "We're abandoning the tower. We're experiencing an earthquake." or words to that effect. As far as the flight attendants? They were Alaska Airlines flt attns. coincidentally and they were very nice. They gave us stuff to eat and drink so we hung out there for about 1 hour until the terminal opened again.

I live north of Muncie, IN(MIE), and it woke me and my wife up, but I never actually felt the shaking, I just heard a thunder-ish sound. I was asleep within minutes, had no idea.

I had just left Louisville and got back home to California.

They blamed me for it.
