Here's one:

The Carvair. Essentially it was a DC-7 with a rebuilt bulbous nose/cockpit section for hauling cars across the English Channel. Its in a scene in "Goldfinger" where Auric Goldfinger is loading his Rolls-Royce aboard for a trip across.

Interestingly enough, the last flying Carvair was based in Fairbanks. It was destroyed last May in a crash at the Nixon Creek mine. Sad to see a piece of history go like that.

Speaking of last flying - this past weekend I was at an airshow where the last flying F-4J Fury in the world performed. Man....that was exciting to see such a rare airplane in the sky.

Actually C-54s to start and then DC-4s, not -7s.

I have read that the redesigned Carvair was actually a few knots faster than the original machine even with the odd nose. I guess this was one of the first of the odd sized cargo airplanes. Later we had the Guppy, the Super Guppy and now the Beluga.

Great looking machine and NOT as some assume a Navy F-86.

I saw that the one in Alaska had crashed. I do believe that there are two still performing work in Africa. I love the Carvair. If I recall, Freddie Laker owned the company that did these conversions prior to owning his airline. Neat airplanes.
