Atlanta Hartsfield Help
I'm going to be ferrying a Cessna 182rg out of Atlanta friday night. First time flying out of there with a small single engine, any help, suggestions, tips, or advise anyone can give?? Going to filing an IFR flight plan out of there.

Actually - traffice lightens up quite a bit after 2300L. Review the 10-9 page with your expected taxi route before calling for clearance, read back all hold short clearances verbatim and you will be fine. Have fun.

You'll have to forgive my lack of experience, but this will be my first time out of such a large airport. Could someone please impart some of their knowledge of the processes involved in launching a 182 out of Atlanta? I'm used to small Class C airports at best, and am a little unsure of everything involved with getting out of such a large and busy Class B airport. I'm not a "new" pilot, i just haven't, as of yet, had the pleasure of sitting on the ramp for hours waiting for a spot to squeeze into for takeoff.

Plan on
A: Sitting in line
B: Getting a long clearance
C: Sitting in line
D: Asked how fast can you go
E: Sitting in line
F: Finally launching
Seriously though, pick up your clearance before you start-up. Before you turn the radio's on, shut off/pull-breakers for anything you're not using(Standby equip, Turn-coordinator, extra radios, transponder, etc...) Use just one radio, pick up the departure ATIS, and then call up clearance delivery. Now, if you get some crazy routing, you're not sitting there with the engine running, just shut off the master, figure out where you're going, then start up and get the taxi clearance.
I'm betting you'll sit for maybe 15-20 minutes max at the runway, probably #15 once you get there, but once you're airborn, all that "Big" airport crap goes away. Just pay attention when you're called, and be prepared for whatever DP you get, usually has the dept. freq on that chart, they expect you to know the first freq automatically at most of these places pending on the DP you were given.

Why would anyone TAKE a -182 into KATL when there is KPDK, KRYY, KFTY and KFCC??? Fuel is outrageous and getting in has to be only more difficult than getting out.
Suggest your -182 driver take it into another regional airport and skip the hassle. PDK if coming from the NE, RYY if from the NW, FTY if from the W and FCC if from the south. Oh and there is Briscoe in the NE also.. lots of more friendly concrete than at KATL.

You won't sit that long - 15-30 minutes if you call at a bad time time. If you have some flexibility with your departure time call clearance on the radio and ask for a phone number. Call them from your cell phone and and explain your situation, ask them for a good time to start so you are in between "banks." If they are not too busy maybe they will chat with you - worse case they are too busy and if thats the case just look at the line at the holdshort. It can be anywhere from 30 aircraft to none. DAL plans all their departures in "banks" where a lot of aircarft all try to leave at once, then random departures until the next arrival bank, repeat process throughout the day. If you can wait until the line shortens then you might be able to time the end of a departure bank and get lucky. In between banks its not too bad. Of course all of this assumes you can see the runway and holdshort from where the 182 is parked. Also be ready to write down instructions so you don't have to ask the controllers to repeat them.

Perhaps you can get in touch with somebody at the airport management or ATC tomorrow and ask them to suggest a good time and make some general recommendations for you. I'm sure they'll appreciate it, and it'll make your life easier. Who knows, maybe they'll even make a special arrangement for you to get out of there as efficiently as possible.
