That sounds fishy...by definition those guys have perfect records. Why would you not hire one? They also know how to impress people at interviews, so it wasn't a personality issue.

The space shuttle is a powered-launch glider. With the launch-only engine, it doesn't qualify as a motorglider.

Some airline applications even say "Do not include glider or helicopter flight time".

Well - guys that are "perfect" and interview well sometimes come off as arrogant - and that may well have turned off the SWA recruiter. OR...it could have been one of those astronaut types that drive cross country in a diaper to kidnap a romantic rival...OR, it could be one of those that drank before a mission.

Oh well, my best guess is that if any weren't hired it would be because they are "look at me, I am a perfect astronaut guy" and that would be incompatible with SWA. For the record, if I were an astronaut with shuttle time I would probably be insuferable - so I am not knocking anyone.

SWA had Hoot Gibson, and they also have an aerobatic pilot - Kirby Chambliss who is quite famous. I would imagine that they fit the profile of SWA pretty well and are probably great guys - just a guess.

You have to be a rated military test pilot with something like 2500 tactical jet hours just to apply for astronaut-pilot. By definition they are all airline eligible.

But how would you get 3 takeoffs and landings in the past 90 days?
Sounds like a violation...

I beg to differ. They ARE required to complete the mission. Other examples are:
Mechanic on a test flight
Medical crew on an air ambulance
a DE on a checkride
Animal handlers (specifically mentioned in the FARs along with several others who are legally not pax))

Just splitting hairs (or is that hares)
