college... is it worth the money???
so i'm sitting here debating on whether to start writing this paper or not....
a few points to be made here... so i don't get the "starving kids in africa" speech....
1.) i appreciate the opportunity to go to college
2.) i understand some things you don't like, you have to do anyways.
BUT!!!!!!
how about a little more reasoning in these classes??
instead of learning about philosophy, and how all these people said these quotes before they knew the world was round, how about how to manage your student loans, so you don't get your anus repossessed?? how about a class on some mortgage payments and different retirement plans that us young people may want to consider before **** hits the fan??
There are so many different classes that are MANDATORY, that are completely useless to almost everybody. For instance, first day of class, professor asks, "How many of you are philosophy majors?" no hands go up. The response I was hoping the teacher would say was, "Ok everybody gets at least a C, granted you show up and participate in class."
I just don't get it, it's a circle. Any philosophy major is going to end up teaching it at a college level anyways, to kids who don't care, except those that are eventually going to teach it to more kids who don't care.
RANT OVER>... just kinda frustrated with how impractical school seems at the moment.

It's not all that bad, after you're done with such classes. The ability to hold a conversation on topics that you don't like or agree with is a big social skill, and it makes it all the easier to converse on topics that you do care about.
Good luck with your paper.

You need college. Yes it is worth it to have that little paper (though I have forgotten many of the things I learned in college, and to this day I cant spell worth a lick!). You need it to get to a major airline. You need it to fall back on something should you get furloughed or released from your flying job (many different ways this can happen, and it always happens to the people who say they never expected it).
IMHO you dont need an aviation degree. Infact, I would suggest a degree that is different from aviation- and that advice is coming from someone who has an aviation degree. You will be better off in the long run and have more to fall back on (and it is usually cheaper too!).

I took basic Philosophy. We had the option of philosophy and psychology. Since psychology and I don't get along I went the philosophy route and loved it. Had a great teacher and some interesting discussions. It could be worse, you could have to take more Literature, and who really has time for all the reading and papers?

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I took a Personal Finance Course hoping to learn some applicable knowledge for real life. It turned out the professor was a banker who felt the course was all about teaching how to be a banker (determining loan qualifications, etc.) I wanted to learn about budgeting and strategies for savvy spending and saving, not how to be a banker.
Anyways, I'm frustrated too, but I stumbled upon a great personal investment course I want to take next semester, which seems like it will be really beneficial (I went to class on the wrong day the first week).
Lots of my general education courses in college so far have had or could have had little meaning. I had to take a Business and Technical Writing course where the professor made us write a paper basically admitting that UFOs create crop circles, what's that supposed to teach me?
The bulk of each course's worth depends on the professor and how the course is taught. Fortunately, I've had really great professors for the most part, which had made my life easier. Unfortunately, it's just those few bad ones that make it frustrating.
Stick it out and don't forget to have some fun along the way

It's worth it here is why. I am a Humanities major and it allowed me to take a wide variety of courses over the years. Starting from Meteorology, Bio, and Maths, and Arts, and learning about Van Gogh and South America, several music courses and just about everything that I like doing, you get the idea. And yes, I did take 2 philosophy classes as well. Believe me, sometimes I feel like what the heck am I doing here, I should have majored in aviation, and half of the time I don't even tell my peers/profs that I want to be an airline pilot for good reasons. So yes, get through the boring papers, and the lousy reading assignments. Do well, stay focused, get that B.S. it will come in handy for you in the future. It's worth it because it will make you a well-rounded, learn ED, educated person. You will enjoy learning new things as you progress, you will enjoy the company of extraordinary professors that you will meet (avoid the bad ones if you can I am sure you are familiar with the website ratemyprofessors.com it has helped me somewhat...) and most of all you will feel good about yourself. One day you can say, yes I have a bachelor's degree! Good luck sir!
p.s. This is my last semester and I feel crazy about saying this, but I already miss school. there is nothing like being an undergrad.

That goes without saying my friend. Hang in there though. There will be times you doubt wx or not you want to continue, and worse times, when you'll think you CAN'T continue, but keep holding out, and you'll get that fancy bit of paper that's embossed, with old english font. It's the most valuable bit of paper you'll ever have; worth ~$160k. AT that point, when you hold it in your hand, you'll realize that it was worth it.
(And the dorm experiences- those are priceless)
