Useless radio phraes
Please stop telling controllers you are "with you". They know that by the mere fact you are talking to them. It is a dumb redundant phrase as is "checking in with you". Sounds like a student pilot when you use those phrases. Call sign and altitude is all you need. When you request something, use the word "request" and not "any chance". Additionaly there is no need to add "traffic permitting" or "if possible" to your request although I guess it is nice to remind the controllers of their job. Oh, and after getting a clearance, you don't have to add "here we go" at the end of your readback. All these extra phrases waste radio time. Thanks.

Thanks...I started using with you after hearing it on MSFS. I have since stopped because I felt like a fool...
For example : xxx approach, n1234, 2 miles NW of xxx thru 1,000 for 3,000 request flight following direct xxx to yyy.
Is that ok or can I do something better? I try to listen to ATC to pick up on phraseology - i have found it improves my calls.
Does anyone have a copy of the AETC guide to phraseology for UPT students?

Radio technique
Mach84 and junior, I am in complete agreement with both of your examples. I would like to add my current pet peeve, which is pilots that position their boom microphone in front of their mouth, resulting in constant "popping" or air noises when transmitting. It sounds like they're transmitting from inside a wind tunnel at times.
To those who may be guilty of this fauxpaux, please position the boom microphone properly to avoid this highly annoying (but way too common) occurrence.

Wanna hear useless? How about on game days when everyone is asking if ATC has the latest score. Give me a break. Do you think they are watching SportCenter down there waiting for you to ask? Turn on the ADF and get it like everyone else.
PS.......
Mach .84????? (speed bump)

I got my commercial with an instructor who hated "with you." He would force you to buy him a piece of carrot cake after the lesson if he caught you saying it. Interesting training technique...
Here's another way to reduce radio clutter: When you first contact approach, and he says something like, "squawk 4266 and ident," most pilots will reply by saying, "squawk 4266 and ident," then they enter the code and push the ident button. I do not read back the instruction. I leave the radio alone, and simply put in the code and hit the ident button on the transponder. The controller gets what he needed out of me, and the radio time is left available for someone else to use.
