Useless radio phraes
#22
i get quite a laugh at listening to the pilots who hardly ever talk to a control tower, and they come on the radio "uh N1234AB over some houses uh yeah 5 thousand feet and wanting to land. oh yeah with info Alpha, to the east uh no west uh no north west of the airport" the controller's at my training airport have alot of patience with these guys, i really have to hand it to them. i think part of all training should involve extensive training with radio communication no matter what type of pilot you are. a missed call could mean an accident.

Boy, you all would have a conniption fit if you flew to the upper Midwest. There is a Minneapolis Center guy that works the freq (it’s around Milwaukee - Lacrosse area) that is probably the friendliest controller I have EVER come across. He will ask you how your day is, tell you to have a good day, talk about his day, etc...
My point is that SOME in the industry try to keep it friendly, especially in the less congested areas of our ATC system. I hope you are all not like this in the cockpit - direct, straight to the point, and no personality. If so, I'd hate to be cooped up with one of you for a four hour flight.
Now having said that, cutting down on pleasantries is essential when you fly into the more congested areas like ORD, ATL and such. In any case, you folks need to relax. After all, the airline industry has enough of its A-holes and unpleasantness about it.

Pet peeves:
"On the hold." No such animal, ICAO or in the AIM. This phrase was the first step in a near miss in DEN several years ago when it was confused with "On the roll." It's "Position and hold" or "Line up and wait" if flying in some overseas locations.
Dropping part of your call sign before ATC drops it. I don't know how many times I have heard this exchange- ATC: "______ 1234 Sierra Pappa, cleared _______." Aircraft: "Sugar Pappa." ATC: "Okay- which Sierra Pappa just responded to me?" I hear this with airliners and military as well, so not just a slam on GA.

Thats all fine and stuff if the freq is busy, but I don't see anything wrong with saying hello when you're on the go home leg at 1130 at night and you're talking to some poor local controller who probably hasn't talked to anyone all night... And for sports scores, you guys have never tried to pick up a game in Eastern NC have you ?

boy, do i ever agree with you guys! i mean, i HATE IT when i hear useless things like, "good afternoon memphis", or "good evening houston", or "good day, sir" when joining or leaving a frequency! i mean, all the time wasted being polite to each other! jeez!
what? you guys pay by the word or something?
i'm glad all the airline problems have been solved so you can focus your laser-like intellect on stuff like this.

And here I am selfishly worrying about pay, retirement, stock and greedy management and my family's future.
I have wasted all this time while being blind to the fact that there are far more terrible problems such as ATC radio communitcation pet peeves.
How about putting this stimulating discussion in the appropriate Bull Sh@t section of the forum.

Is that ok or can I do something better?

Yep, the old human factors argument that "for" sounds a lot like "four". It's especially important in non-US airspace for obvious reasons.
If I could add a pet peeve - when flying into Narita's airspace remember they don't have an "approach" or "center" frequency. It's 'control" and "radar", a minor point but it is a pet peeve of mine
