I think that came from the times when it took a split second from the time you pushed the PTT till the time the X-mitter spooled up to send your voice.

"And" was usually cut off by the time your radio actually started x-mitting and the other guys old tub reciver detected a strong signal enough to break squealch.

Seems like I'v seen alot of old timers doing this... and just a few young timers.

But I agree that with the new collins and king stuff in the plane "AND" is not needed anymore. Just a bad habit.

Wanna hear useless? How about on game days when everyone is asking if ATC has the latest score. Give me a break.

I have to agree. Another nuisance is the guy who thinks he's really cool by asking every single contoller he comes across "How ya doin'?". It's so disingenuois (not sure of the spelling there) and lame that most controllers don't even respond to it. I had to follow a CAL Express RJ for 45 minutes in which he would preface every single read back to ATC with either "ok" or "alrighty", but in a stretched out manner such as oooohhhkkkaayyy as if giving his slow mind a chance to absorb the new information. He probably was.

I have got to say this is rather funny, I am guilty of saying most of the phrases talking to ATC. Though in my defense I picked these phrases up from others over the radio. Anyway here is a question. Today I was talking to BOS app and heard Jetblue 444 coming into BOS. Now they announced themselves as "Jetblue triple 4". When you have callsign with three of the same numbers should say "Jetblue four fortyfour" or "Jetblue triple 4". Just curious... and I 'll try to break those habits, didn't know it would even bother anybody. Its funny to hear some things up there esspecially from airline pilots. I was once overflying bangor ME and they warned and XJT flight to use caution in the ramp for nill breaking action and his reponse was by saying "Okay we'll take it creepy crawley XJT***" Funny stuff....

How about: "Good Day" Of course everyone does it, including me, but does anyone really care what kind of day they have? Do think the ARTTC controller really gives a hoot about your day? I don't care so much for the job these days, why fake it?

And this: "See Ya" when changing frequencies. Will you really?

Referring to TCAS as the "fish finder", I guess the only way that piece of gear would be better to these pilots is if it could show Nascar re-runs too.

I disagree with that because I think it is kind of a respect thing. When calling up an air traffic controller for the first time, I always say something like "Denver Approach, Good afternoon, Cessna 123...", and I always say "Good day" when signing off. As long as the rest of your transmission is clear, quick, and concise, it is ok to include a little respect. Controllers are a good asset to have; they are there to help me, and I like to pass on a little respect.


I liked the previous post about hearing some pretty funny things on the radio. Once a pilot broadcasted "seatbelts" over ATC, and I swear everyone else on the frequency responded "Yup, we got ours on." Heard many other funny ones over the year...

Who hasn't. I include some sort of hello to each check in that I make:

"xyz center, citation 1234, with you FL310" or
"xyz center, citation 1234, out of 270 for FL390, hello" or
"xyz center, citation 1234, FL370, good afternoon".

Why? So that the controller knows that I'm a new arrival (as opposed to making a vacating altitude call. It adds maybe an extra second (if they are so busy that I can't check in, then I don't bother anyways), and helps them sort things out quickly without having to look at the strips (I know because I've done it).

Additionally, I acknowledge squawks - at least with a callsign or a readback of the code. This way the controller can move on to the next aircraft instruction, without having to wait and see that you put the correct code into the box. If you don't acknowledge, then the controller has to wait until he/she sees it change on the scope, which might be as much as 5-10 seconds later (depending on the radar sweep and how quickly you input the code.)

My biggest pet peeve? The people that can't take a friggin moment to LISTEN TO THE FREQUENCY after switching over. How many times a day do you hear some dummy hit the switch to change freqs, then key the mic, stepping on a conversation or butting between and instruction and readback?

Any of you pet peevers arent used to daytona and orlando airspace are you? So many students its extremly critical sometimes if you want something from ATC sugarcoat it or you might not get it. If you leave out the with you the controllers want you to say again.

But I too have my pet peeves too. All of my studnets know that they shouldnt take the runway they should leave it for others to use. and zero is not oh.

Oh hey do you think we can really get that nascar thing approved? Thatd be the best. They were testing for the daytona 500 the last two weeks so most of my students "got to" practice maneuvers over the race track or landings at daytona.
