El Al 1862 was a terrible situation...if the flight crew had only known the seriousness of their situation they could have nursed the plane out away from population, unfourtanatly all those people on the ground had to die to...tragic.....another enigne loss that comes to mind is the AA DC-10 out of ORD that lost the left engine at liftoff, another sad story.....everyone dies

I don't know anything about the 747 lost engine, but engines are designed to shear off if need be. If it's getting rough, it will shake itself off the pod to reduce damage to the aircraft. If it's a smooth failure, not problem.

This one was pinned on P&W. Bad weld from what I heard. The pylon did not let go as it should, so the motor ripped out some leading edge devices and put a few holes in the top of the wing before falling away. Crew did a awesome job recovering the aircraft. Have flown with all of them. Top shelf guys.
