Not at all saying that we should be unprofessional inside the cockpit, but we have to be aware of the image we project to the public. Some people I've seen should never be allowed anywhere near a transport aircraft. Stick to something like crop dusting if you want to call yourself a professional pilot, but can't help looking sloppy.

As far as the blinking blue tooth piece in the ear goes, get a life. Seriously, are you that important you have to have the phone on standby at all times at ear level, you are not that important. God have mercy on the bluetooth having, Guitar Hero playing, backpack wearing pilots out there.

If I ever see that or any DB tooling through some concourse with a "Guitar Hero" guitar hanging off of his flight case, I might be inclined to beat him with it (out of the view of the general public). I encourage others to do so also. What happened to having some respect and pride in your professional appearance? I don't recall an iPod being part of the uniform either, but I'll save that for another day.

I think of it in the terms that I wouldn't want to go to the hospital and see any health care professional walking through the hallways with a guitar hero or ipod on them. If they do that when you are watching them, what do they do when you are not watching them? People trust their lives to us every day, we should at least APPEAR as if we are capable and worthy of that trust.

Personally, I draw the line at the waiting area at the gate. Using an MP3 player while strutting down the terminal is unprofessional. While in uniform, I believe that it is our unwritten duty to give directions or to point folks to someone that can answer questions. However, there is nothing wrong with using an MP3 player while relaxing and waiting at a gate.
As for wired or wireless cell phone kits, since they do have a practical application, there is nothing unprofessional about using these things. There's a reason they're called hands free kits. Not to mention, they will mitigate risks of any alleged adverse effects on the brain from holding the phone to your head all day. However, I do think it is pretentious to wear one all day to be quick draw McGraw on answering the phone.
