Another sad and disturbing ATC article

The saddest part is that in a struggle like this, the administration won't feel the punch. Instead, we, the pilots and passengers, will get the worst of it. The administration won't care what happens and there will be no repercussions (lame-duck year). Bush knows there's no way this will come back on him. Even worse is that the public will never know what's happening. They'll blame the airlines for delays like they always have.

yup, the feds knew about this shortage for many years now, they just never did anything about it. the article says all the retirements and blah blah blah but that's something that everyone KNEW was coming. I myself got offered THREE interviews in the past 5 months or so.. that's how desperate they are, to keep on offering interviews to people who keep on declining it.. but it's like with the regional airline industry.. unless they improve pay and the contract they're not going to attract the right candidates (or even any.) why would anyone go to work in a center for 32k? for a demanding job that requires that much skill, in that expensive of a city?

Was the government expecting technology to replace some of the manpower requirements? I ask, because the AF was expecting the C-130 to get an aviation modernization and get rid of the navigator position. The 130 AMP kept getting pushed into the future and no one hired any more navigators, so the navigator career field had a substantial shortage.
I know the technology changes our jobs a lot, and I was wondering what the ATC long range plan is. Any ATC dudes/dedettes like to discuss?
