Default What was your worst mistake

What is the worst mistake you guys have made while flying...Busting airspace, gear up landing etc... And if it's still pending with the FAA then I definately want to hear it. I taught an aviation safety class at one time, and found that even people with minimal experience have some good lessons learned. I think this should be interesting due to the vast amount of experience in these forums.

Years ago as a brand new instructor at VNY with my very first student, we did the preflight inspection, started up and taxied approximately 1/4 mile before I figured out we did not receive a taxi clearance! Tower never noticed and I swiftly pulled off the taxiway and hid the airplane between two large business jets parked on the ramp and called for a clearance. I learned from that one.

One time I landed gear up without a landing clearance in prohibited airspace after running out of fuel in solid IMC without an instrument flight plan filed.

That was pretty stupid. ;-)

Whoa! how did that one turn out with the FAA. Or was it just too much paperwork and they let you off.

Yeah the FAA was busy with user fee's and the age 65 rule at the time, lucky me!

Eh. I did the same thing. Turns out it's a loophole in the system and a combination of all of these somehow cancel each other out and it's totally legal. So I have done it 3 more times.
