Default Cost of airline travel today!

In general is it cheaper to fly today than it was 5/10/15/20 years ago? Any can anyone provide proof?

First ticket I ever bought was MKE-TPA, round trip, $139, in 1972. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $668.44 (in 2006 dollars).

Cheaper today than prior to deregulation in 1978.

But of course. Deregulation was why fares became cheaper (among a slew of other happenings as a result).
