The airport car is a 1995 Geo Metro....paid for
The home car is a 1998 Dodge Avenger (that is our "nice" car)....paid for
The fiancee's (also a pilot) car is a 1989 Honda Civic...paid for

I love to tell people that the Civic got a new paint job. It's white and we got it for $1000. All the wheel wells were rusted out so my fiancee spray painted the rust white.....NEW PAINT JOB!

Airblazer, That must be a common ford thing. I had a Tempo in highschool that did the same thing. Old ramp van at the FBO I work at: same thing.

My ride, 1993 Jeep Cherokee. 4 banger, 5 speed, 185k. Floor rusted out so I replaced with the same steel used on Humvees (thanks dad), the wind noise is crazy, it sounds like a diesel at idle but it starts every time and I rarely have issues with it other than typical 13 year old car issues. Seeing how I'm just about to start playing CFI, I doubt it will be going anywhere in the near future.

Funny guys

Since many pilots (at least at my airline) are commuters, the question was poised correctly . .plural. “What kind of car(s)” .. . ?

Since we need “Airporters” many of us have/had many cars. No need to impress someone driving to the airport at 0130 <g> Sometimes they get parked at outlying airports for months at a time. . . until you can hold a bid back there. There were many cars at the FredEx MEM parking lot that had small saplings growing up through the grill.

1973 Suburu station wagon (used) called him “Kermit”
1979 Toyota SR-5 PU (bought new)
1980 Mercedes 300D (diesel) wife thought it was ‘smelly’, so traded in for:
1982 Volvo 242 (bought new)
1983 Porsche 944 (bought new in Stuttgart)
1984 VW GTI (bought new)
1988 Toyota 4-Runner (bought new)
1989 Jeep Cherokee Limited (bought new)
1991 Mercedes 300E (wife’s -get to drive it once in a while)
1991 BMW 325 Ci (used)
long drought saving for kid’s college <g>
1997 VW Jetta
2001 Mercedes SLK 320
2003 Toyota Priius
2003 HD Sportster 1200

Most pilots I know are WAY beyond the “cars are penis symbols” -and are pretty practical. That is NOT to say that they choose a wife properly -and MANY involuntarily end up with a new Lexus in that garage every year so the wife looks good in the grocery store parking lot. Some of my buds who lived in Germantown called their spouse’s Mercedes “Krogervagens”

Since I don’t commute any longer, the Volvo, GTI, Cherokee and Suburu got donated to “Operation HomeFront” so a SAN military family could have transportation while the warrior was deployed. They all had less than 70,000 miles on them!

Most are still out there. They were supposed to move a bunch of the really ragged ones to another parking lot to either be claimed or disposed but everytime I go through the Dem parking lot, I see cars that haven't moved since who knows when.

Hey, Captain Drew, can I have the bike and skiis if I'm in YVR?

Our parking lot at ILN was much like you describe the MEM lot. Unfortunately I haven't been out there since my 1981 Tercel broke down last Christmas.

I'm still driving the only new car I've ever bought: a 1995 Tacoma. We just traded in our 210,000 mile Expedition for a 2002 Highlander. Looks like we have a thing for Toyotas...

You BET! . . if they didn’t abscond with them . . and if you can convince the Bellman that you are a dirt bag frieghtdog. . course, HE has probably retired by now too <G>

I think you will like the Highlander. We just got a close look at the new one at the SAN Auto Show last week. My daughter almost bought one for her job as a sales rep for Gallo.

2001 Ford F-150 KingCab
2003 Honda CRV
1991 33' Southwind Motorhome

I'm not a big car nut. All of them have a purpose and are functional.
