Of course, if you work for an airline that everyone hates (like I do), its still up to the captain to say yea or nay if you can go.
Not 100% sure of this one, but I believe it works off of our passports, not barcodes on our ID's. We're still waiting for CASS here at ASA, but from what I have heard, that is how it works.

Some airlines/stations are apparently not technologically advanced enough to use barcodes and readers. Around here the agent still has to look you up in an antiquated (although now windows based) computer to verify you are listed in the Cass system. This is done by combination of Name, Airline, employee ID and passport number etc. If you are listed in CASS, then we still use the handy jumpseat two copy form and note "CASS Approved" on it. We fill the cabin seats before the cockpit jumpseat(s) as a general rule. So all CASS buys you here is one or two extra "seat" options on tight flights.....provided we have enough O2 on board for you in the cockpit...!

But the pay doesn't matter because I'm flying a jet!

Browntail:

I really, honestly appreciate your statements. I truly mean that! Although, I don't personally share your outlook, (In your defense, my lack of life experience may be why) it is nice to have a little dose of reality thrown my way when I get a little too giddy about being a pilot. And as for: "Are you in for a rude awakening!" I certainly hope you're not correct. In the meantime, thanks everyone for the posts!

I'm out on mil leave right now and my FAA physical expired. Can I ride in the back still through CASS?

Most companies block CASS authorization while a pilot is out on any leave or furlough, etc. That being said, CASS is for cockpit access only. As long as you have credentials to get past the gate agent and display to the captain, you should have no problem with a seat in the back. Your expired medical is another issue. If it were me, I would let you ride. If you brought me a snack.

Let's keep it simple and legal:

CASS means cockpit jumpseat authorized. That is a positive computer ID in the database of where you are trying to jumpseat. If you dont fall into this category, you must have a jumpseat agreement with the company that you are trying to jumpseat on. If this is the case, there must be room in the back...

After CASS or ID verification, the captain must agree to your transportation.

CASS is typically blocked on furlough or extended leaves of absence.

There seems to be a misunderstanding of what CASS is regarding the PIC's authority. I don't think it is or was ever intended to go over the captain but it was put in place post 9/11 to give the gate agents the ability to verify that the credentials being presented are legit, rather than possible forgeries. If the same ID info doesn't show up on the CASS screen then it would be possible that the ID is not up to snuff.

I have seen gate agents not know how to use CASS and some have attitude, but 98% of that can be nipped in the bud by the captain going to the gate to check if there are any jumpseaters.

I've denied jumpseaters twice and once was because we were overweight and late and I feel bad about it to this day, but I also know there was a nearly empty flight just an hour later and so he got where he was going. The other instance was going to Canada and we couldn't take the guy on the actual jumpseat as it was not allowed at that time.

CASS is an added layer of security, put in place after 9/11, to verify the validity of the credentials being presented in order for the pilot in question to be permitted to occupy the actual jumpseat. CASS approval is not even needed in general if the jumpseating pilot is going to occupy a seat in the cabin, though most gate agents run it through CASS anyway.
