Question about airline fare theory
Question for our major pilots:
I'm planning an EWR-MSY trip in late january for a professional conference. I live in Jersey and am a very loyal CAL flier. I looked on the website and an EWR-MSY round trip is $372. In comparison I looked at other warm-weather destinations during that week (PHX, LAX, SFO) and they were only $292. LAS was only slightly more at $332. Can anybody explain why MSY is a good bit more expensive than those other destinations considering a) it's a much shorter flight, and b) MSY is still recovering from katrina and therefore theoretically not as "desirable" as LAX, LAS, etc.
In comparison I flew EWR-MSY in May 2006 to do volunteer work and it was like $218.
Not that I'm compaining. I love CAL and will gladly pay the $372. Just trying to figure out how the airlines come up with their fares.

You will die a slow, painful, torturous suicide trying to figure it out, no rhyme or reason...I can fly BOS-TPA for $120 r/t but BOS-JFK/DCA is $300, figure that one out...granted I am only a pilot with a couple of masters degrees, none of which is an MBA but I don't think it will ever make sense...
