I wouldn't call the AF hardcore, but there is almost no difference between the two these days. I think you'd be in for a rude awakening. It's not the same guard your parents and grandparents grew up with.

My local guard units, both air and ground, have spent serious time in Iraq in the last few years---hardcore.

I've been there and we(not my squadron) lost 2 Viper pilots from my former base in Iraq since last December. So, it's not without risk. But for the most part(and there are exceptions), it's not hardcore for the AF over there. My hats off the the Army, Marines, and SOF dudes...When people thank me for my service, that's who I defer to these days.
