Default Sorry, but I got to ask…

...what is al the meowing on 121.5 all about?

As a foreign airline pilot flying into the US, it befuddles me.

It befuddles most of us.
At least we had a calm year during COVID.

It truly embarasses the mature and professional among us. And I sincerely apologize on behalf of US pilots. It rarely happens on red-eyes, take from that what you will.

No clue and who cares, get over it.

Thanks for the relevant responses above. I thought it might be part of some movement or something.

I suppose we must see it as a cry for relevance in this big bad world (just like the response of ImSoSuss), but if I could ask those who love spouting these feline calls, please, please, please, could you display some originality at least? How about some dog noises, or a cow or horse? A ship leaving port perhaps? Just a few ideas of mine, feel free to use your own witt as you are about to press your mic.

Or better yet, leave all this futile subversivness behind you and show restraint. Sure, people won't hear you, but people won't think of you as a garden tool anymore either.

Anyhoo, I feel a bit better now

It has been creeping to other parts of the world too. I have heard it in Australia and around SE Asia, Philippines etc. And not with American accents.

Accented meows? Hmm. Russian Blues, Persians, and Siamese perhaps...

I've heard it in Europe, too. Dubai, as well. Just heard it there a couple of days ago.

It's immaturity and stupidity, is what it is.

While flying for Jet Airways in the early to mid 2010s during the World Cricket finals, 121.50 was lit brighter than the sun.

Monitor guard today, if you are flying in that part of the world, and let me know how silent guard is.

Yes there was a time when guard was monitored, just monitored. More jets, more crews, more routes equals more child like behaviour on the RTs... Alas... Tis pity... Tis True.

I'm pretty sure the genesis of the "meow" thing was the movie "Super Troopers". Watch the movie for full comprehension, it's actually quite hilarious, especially in a North American cultural context.

But doing it on guard is BS. It was funny the first two or three times, 20 years ago. Not so much now.
