US pushes back against Ukraine pleas to lift weapon restrictions

“There’s no one capability that will, in and of itself, be decisive in this campaign,” US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says.
SEPTEMBER 7, 2024 1:22 PM CET
BY KOEN VERHELSTStriking targets far inside Russia with U.S. and other Western weapons would not make a big difference for Ukraine in its defense against Russia's aggression, American Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said on Friday.

“There’s no one capability that will, in and of itself, be decisive in this campaign,” Austin told reporters at Germany's Ramstein Air Base, where he met with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and fellow allies in the so-called Ukraine Defense Contact Group.

“We had this discussion about tanks; we had this discussion about other capabilities,” Austin said.

"There are a lot of targets in Russia — a big country, obviously," Austin added. "And there's a lot of capability that Ukraine has in terms of UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles] and other things to address those targets."

His words represent a diplomatic pushback to pleas from Zelenskyyand his new Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha to allow strikes deeper inside Russia with Western weapons, as the Kremlin keeps terrorizing civilian targets in Ukraine from bases in Russia. Zelenskyy argues that Kyiv's gains in Russia's Kursk region have turned the tables on Russia.

During an earlier speech in Ramstein, Austin said the U.S. is "laser-focused on Ukraine's priority needs." Addressing Zelenskyy directly, he assured him "we hear your urgency. And we share it."

Ahead of the Ramstein meeting, Washington announced it would provide another $250 million in security assistance to Kyiv, while U.K. Defense Secretary John Healey pledged £162 million for 650 new multi-role missiles. A senior U.K. government official, granted anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, said Britain's aim was to start supplying they missiles by year end.

Back at home Zelenskyy faces an outcry from the opposition who claim his recent reshuffle of government ministers is more of a power grab.

Just quickly skimmed your post.
However:
At the end it is mentioned that there is an "outcry" over recent
firifirings by Zelensky.
My hope is that observers can see the significance in the fact that there IS an outcry by the public.
Ukraine is not Russia. Never has been. No matter what Putin claims. This public outcry is evidence of that.

I assume you are referring to the fact that there is censorship in Russia and a lack of objective reporting. Increasingly, that seems to becoming universal.

it is certainly to be lamented. Indeed, why would any government believing their citizens unable to separate truth from fiction absent a government decree even consider allowing those citizens to actively participate in an electoral process? Government decreed "official truth" is always a step on the road to totalitarianism.

By comparison, calling someone childish names, impugning their intelligence or patriotism, is merely rude and uncivil.

but apparently being a liar, purposefully ignoring simple direct questions, intentionally obfuscating issues, and incessant posting of propaganda that turned put to be not true and failing to circle back is all ok in this bots mind.

It deserves no respect, it deserves none of your real attention. It is here to serve its own interests. It is not interested in real discussion. It only wants to argue (take thermite vs willy for example….. not the point being made, but it couldn’t resist being contrarian).

keep harvesting those potatoes bot…..

The current vessel for executing and delivering false information is so far beyond what it was in the 40s-90s i would respectfully counter that the world is objectively facing a new crisis that we have never faced before. Last i read, 2800 right wing influencers have been identified by the DOJ as having been paid by the RU government to directly influence millions of people. That has never happened on this scale before. The ability to send propaganda directly to the computer screens of millions of sheep has not existed until recently.

this is not just a “deep fakes are nothing new” moment. This is a revolution in the execution of informational warfare.

Major Hubcapped:

The rules of bs banter engagement exist for your safety and the safety of other thread combatants. Can’t play by the rules, and there aren’t many, your questioning is going nowhere. If you’re capable of hurling only insults, the least you can do is come up with some new material.

So you are contrarian with max, get asked a simple question, and refuse to answer because you actually know the answer. If you perceive “i can’t understand you” as an insult , then you need to adjust your threshold.

however if you are confusing yourself with your other account…..i stand by my statements. I am not convinced that your third party reference was not in fact a mistake you made whilst thinking you were typing under the cargo profile.

im sorry that pointing out your errors of perception regarding information warfare touch a nerve.
