It was explained to you - you simply didn't listen. The initial Russian attack was based on bad intel - not surprising really - and the Russians just grabbed territory like crazy, way over extending their logistic support. When the Ukrainians didn't fold it became obvious even to the Russians that they needed to pull back to a defensible position because they were overstretched and couldn't avoid being outflanked and isolated and then destroyed in detail. Not surprising really. That well might have been the only combat 95% of the invaders had ever seen.

if you go back in history, it's not surprising. When we entered WWII our initial incursion was in North Africa - a little place called the Kasserine Pass.

But when you neglect your conventional forces enough, the calculus of deterrence fails. It comes down to the Question of whether or not you think NATO will start a nuclear war to salvage the Ukraine. At that pont, deterrence fails, because nobody seriously believes anyone but the Ukrainians woukd start a nuclear war to save Ukraine and Ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons long ago.
