Going back to the Civil War in the US, more soldiers died of disease that died in combat or from combat wounds.

Going forward to WWII (my father fought in it), Sulfa drugs (the forerunner of antibiotics) greatly reduced deaths due to disease for soldiers.

Since then, the number of those in combat dying from disease has sharply declined due to antibiotics, to the point of not being the primary point of discussion.
