I don't get much into millennial vs. boomer or whatever labels (more we're in this together type myself) but as a supposed Gen X'er I'm beginning to wonder how many more 'once in a lifetime' events we're going to see. The world always churns & burns of course, but I've had my fill for awhile.

41, so young end if Xers or the oldest Millenial depending on who's definition you use. Generationally, can't we catch a break.

This will be the 7th time losing a job to furlough, layoff, bankruptcy, company folds since I was 17. Considering I spent 10+ years in the Navy, I'm averaging a furlough/layoff or some other job gone every 2 years in the workforce. Most of my college friends are in similar boats. Jobs that last over 3 years are a rarity before the position is eliminated.

Aerospace engineering, auto industry, oil industry (TWICE), and 2 flying jobs, now this.

Didn't get on with a major until 39. I'm over 1000 into the UNA list at Delta, so I'll be on the street in the fall.

1988ish, to rent a Cessna 172 at KOUN airport was $27.50hr wet.
Today you probably just could look at it for $30.00 for a moment or two.
A lot of sweat and energy was displaced to recover what was to be paid back in good ernest to those whom sacrificed earnings, during abnormal economic stressed times. Will all this be lost in vain in the days ahead?
Most of the new generation is wanting to do nothing worthy for the team or the company. They just require an ‘I Love Me’ piece of paper and a bottle of bubbles to make a beautiful environmentally safe bubble. Yes, there are a few people who think and behave differently, they will need our support to be successful in aviation, more power to them.

~long day, A local fried chicken place got my order wrong for the family today and I had to show them how to make correct change (argh).
I should have performed a pre-leave tarmac check!

The US "civil war" was not fought "over slavery"

You should learn some history yourself.

You know, I am from Georgia. Born and raised there. I was drowning in civil war history throughout my early years. I too originally thought it was about states rights. I stood fast for that opinion and still believe 1000% that states rights supersede the federal government with the exception of the original bill of rights. I was a card carrying conservative republican, still mostly am. Was even in the young republicans in college. I made the usual high school trips to Fort Sumter. And stood on the grounds that were the opening of the civil war. I know all about the history of the tariffs and the union and the anger in the south over Lincoln's election, the Crittenden Compromise and the eventual move to succession and then on to the civil war. Ironically all democrat agendas. Republicans were the ones fighting to abolish slavery entirely. Contrary to the line the modern day democrats want you to believe.

But then one day a good friend of mine, also from Georgia and black pointed out to me that the main states rights that the south was fighting over was for slavery.

So enlighten me. Honest question. What is it you think the civil war was fought over?

It was fought over the right to secede.

You should read Lincoln's inauguration speech and then get back to me.

From a certain point of view, you are correct. However the reason they wanted to secede is because the South Confederacy feared the North and the Republicans were going to abolish slavery. Not commonly known is the Republican party was started to abolish slavery. Imagine that. Talk about revisionist history. And now we are led to believe the Republicans are the enemy of minorities.

The congressional democrats basically quit in mass and went home to the Southern states they represented. Allowing the Republicans to pass a number of laws that were good for the country and that the South was strongly against. That just made the South even more angry.

Ironically Lincoln didn't want to abolish slavery. He was concerned it would split the country and said so in his inauguration speech. Turns out he was right. The war started when Lincoln tried to resupply the Federally managed (and owned) fortification Fort Sumter which was part of the Third Wave for national defense. South Carolina has given up the land Fort Sumter was built on for the defense of the nation. Now they wanted it back. So they tried to take it. And that's when the fight started.

Yes publically it was all about the states rights, among others, to secede. But the reason they wanted to secede was to maintain the right to own slaves.

Much like our original rebellion and founding of the country you need to look further than just public statements to understand how we got here. That's what makes things like the federalist papers so important in understanding history.
