When talking about the South and Slavery keep in mind the average Southerner could not have cared less about Slavery. On my Mom's side I have a Great x 4 Grandfather who purchased a Slave in 1843 (family Historian has the bill of sale). Price was $250 for a 27 yr old Women (Life expectancy then was around 40 years). Google says $250 then is about $70K now. If Slavery was still legal how many people today could afford $70K? Only the upper 1% or so or big business. It was the same in the South Pre-Civil War. Slavery/No Slavery had little effect on the average Southerner's life.

You are once again using the word society when you mean state. They are not interchangeable terms.
