Nope. Still a tool. It was a legacy pilot trying to help, I mean questioning a couple of regional pilots on their ability to fly their aircraft, and that’s a no no.

I actually see both sides. Ground is trying to do anything that might help two pilots who were obviously in a fight for their very lives and had their hands full. He was told to monitor but jumps in pretty early, asking if they ran the QRH didn’t help in any way because if they had the free hands to do it they would have done it, but couldn’t because they were busy flying the aircraft and it took both of their strength just to keep the nose down.

I heard a guy that was just trying to help, unfortunately, the help he provided was worthless to them at the time, and could have been more distraction than it was worth.

I don't think he was trying to question their ability, but rather had a brain fart moment there. I'm sure he wants a mulligan on that one.

He sounds like less of a jackass asking if they ran the QRH considering they said they.... hadn’t run the QRH

i have to agree, ground was asking for help and after seeing the radar and voice combo put together i can see why, republic guys did a fantastic job but as an observer we can only try to help. after 2 smoking hole accidents due to trim runaways recently i think we are all aware of how fast things can go bad and want to keep that from happening. after hearing the ground recording i dont think DL was being tool-ish, just trying to remember a plane he used to fly and see where they were. I bet the DL guy wishes he could re word his question though.

More importantly, did they run the IMSAFE checklist?

He doesn't get an A+ for his contribution by any means (maybe a D+) but he was asked for help by ATC, so he was put on the spot and had to try. He didn't know how bad it was or wasn't. I've NEVER heard ATC ask other aircraft for help like this, it's so unusual I would assume it was a really bad situation (sounds like it almost was).

I'm not going to monday-morning a guy who got put on the spot.

Thank you for posting this. Now all the usual suspects can quit their ridiculous “I suspect” statements.

We’ve all said dumb things at one time or another, particularly after being offered the opportunity.
