Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check that out! Does it have a native VPN client or is that separate?

I use it for 4 reasons.

1. Often times the wired network is faster, especially if you can use the cord plugged into the back of the TV. In a certain overseas hotel there wifi is 15 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up but the TV is 100 down and 60 up with no login.

2. All devices on same network. No captive login page for each device (minor annoyance I know).

3. VPN for entire network. Especially great for international travel where I need a US ip address. You'd be surprised how many websites refuse traffic from out of the country. Also good for countries that are not known for their political freedoms although I don't go to anything that I think they would find objectionable while overseas.

4. Chromecast.
This link doesn't work. What do you use?

To the guy asking about the VPN client, yes it's built in. I have it set-up with Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN for now but will probably go with Nord or Express to get higher speeds international. It has a switch which I haven't configured to turn the VPN on and off.

I use a pokefi device. I bought mine in Hong Kong. I’m from Asia and use it on all my international layovers.
It works in over 70 countries. There are different data plans. I use the $15 for 5GB valid for 2 years.

5GB lasts me a long time since I only use it for instant messaging, maps, and occasional browsing (no social media with photos that use up a lot of data) while I’m exploring a new country. I use the hotel’s WiFi when I’m in my room.

There are other plans as well like unlimited data for a number of days.

I haven’t been able to use it in New Zealand, UAE, and Saudi Arabia, but I just checked their website and they’re testing it in those countries. You can visit their website to see which countries it works in and find out if it meets your needs.

I have a local sim from my country with unlimited data and the T-Mobile international plan. I only use the T-Mobile in countries my pokefi doesn’t work in.

Thanks, I'll have to check it out! Is it powered through the Ethernet or microUSB port?

Maybe a silly question, but how do you log in to a hotel wifi with this? Like... Where do you enter the room number, credentials, etc. Is there an app on your phone?

i THINK that this device requires a wired connection to the hotel network... not the WiFi.

Thanks, I’ll check out the router you linked. Out of curiousity, why doesn’t a poe version make sense for travel?

Since it’s connected by Ethernet you won’t need to login.
