Default Ordering a Laptop Tonight - DVD burning capability?

What uses could I have for paying an extra $50 and getting the capability to burn DVDs?

Obviously I could put movies on DVDs but can DVDs be used for file storage like CDs can?

Yes it can. The main difference between DVD and regular CDs is that CDs store data on a single layer but DVDs store data on multiple layers. More capacity. Like, a lot more.

Thanks, I'm going with the $50 extra for the DVD burning capability. Over five years that's $10 a year and this thing better last me five years!

Well, you can burn dual layer DVD's but its a completely different format. DVD's hold more data because of the disc type, format, and yes, the dual layers if you want them

I've burned one DVD with my dvd burner...and it was an HDTV test dvd...i used it once. For 50 bucks why not, but i wouldn't get it with the idea that you will be burning alot of them...unless you are a super pirate or huge nerd.

CD = approx 720 meg
DVD is something like 9 gig. Usually overkill for data, considering you can get 2gig flash drives these days, but required if you are saving video or a lot of photos.

If you have a mac, get "mac the ripper" and you'll be able to copy and burn any movie dvd. There's probably windows based programs that will do the same thing but I don't know what they are.

I do a lot of photo stuff, and I back everything up on DVDs. Especially if you want to save .raw files from a good camera, CDs start to seem like a waste. Also, I make copies of DVDs that I buy so that I don't have to worry about the original getting scratched. I use the burned copy and keep the original safe. That would work for rented DVDs (in theory, for the purpose of public internet forums, I claim to not know from personal experience). Look for a program called "DVD Shrink" if you want to try.
