I'm OK with beards.

I'm not OK with spending even $0.05/hour negotiating capital to get beard approval. If the company wants to authorize beards out of the goodness of their hearts, or to attract/retain millennial pilots, great I'm all for it. I might even grow one myself. But I'm not giving up any $.

Amen. Grow a Santa beard when you retire. Sweating the small stuff is a waste of energy.

What seems small to you is not the same to someone else.
Instead of looking out for what you consider important, maybe consider that not everyone cares about the same stuff as you.

For me personally, being able to have a trimmed beard would be one of the biggest QOL improvements. I hate shaving, I grow a lot of facial (quickly), and I get ingrown hairs often. And the amount of time I spend trimming and shaving adds up to a significant amount

Imagine people having different opinions of QOL. Imagine that

And other people, in fact most of them, want more money and scheduling improvements before they want someone else to grow a beard. If it's going to cost the pilot group it's going to be about 85% opposed.

If you're looking for free beards, that's not up to pilots, it's up to management. Take it up with them (people have at my airline).

Sure, but when people write something off as “this is a waste and therefore it doesn’t deserve any attention,” that’s the exact opposite of the type of person I’d want in a union. I don’t care if someone else wants something entirely different than myself, everyone deserves representation

You are ****ing into the wind. The airlines where you can wear a beard are that way because management decided to allow it for reasons of their own. At pax airlines, pilot appearance is part of the branding. That has significant value to management. If they don’t like beards, for whatever reason, the cost to get them will be too high. If you really want them, convince your peers to hammer that on your next Union survey as a high priority. Good luck!

Anyway, what’s the attraction to looking like a member of a ZZ Top tribute band or a Civil War general? What a beard, there’s lots of non-airline operators hiring and don’t care, mostly. I’ve visited a corporate operator whose pilots were required to wear jeans, t-shirts and flip-flops. Paid well, if you like that kind of thing.

If you really must have a beard, Hawaiian Airlines allows them.
