Mesa I seriously doubt has the cash to do expensive conversions from 700 to 550 right now and in any case would not do it unless it was sure they would have someone to fly them for (UA). Like I said nobody knows the future, contracts can be renegotiated, etc...But as of now this is all talk from JO. Im sure he would love to take GJ's flying, but as of now thats not whats happening.
And one other thing, Its not simply pulling seats and replacing to convert 700 to 550. Its much more involved and expensive than it seems on the surface. Its an entirely new cabin. So its an investment that costs money and takes time.

Mesa reported a profit in Q2 this year and is still sitting on a mountain of cash from the IPO. If UA wants Mesa to fly the 550s JO can afford the conversions and already owns the 700s.

Yeah I should have said that differently. Mesa does have the cash but would not invest it in conversions unless he had a solid deal to fly them for UA, which he doesnt right now. But with 550s sitting around ready to fly right now and not flying cause of low demand i dont see why UA would award JO a contract to fly any 550s right now. Lot of other factors here, and I cannot say enough that NOBODY on this board can predict the future of any airline right now. Be wary of posts that proclaim to do that.

Curious, how much liquid cash does Mesa have on hand?

https://youtu.be/u_aLESDql1U Seriously though. Never underestimate JO. Wouldn’t shock me if he’s waiting until all the GeauxJet planes are converted before he pounces in. Guy might be a Delta Bravo but he’s not an idiot when it comes to running bottom feeder airlines. He could teach Uncle Hulas a thing or three

I agree he will try to undercut GJ and wants to make as much money as he can with the 700s that were supossed to be leased to GJ that he is now stuck with. Like I said he would love to take all of GJ's flying if he could. GJ is not in a position to add and convert more airplanes during COVID when they are overstaffed and burning cash and the flying is currently not there. My point is just to try to dispell some of the flagrantly false info I see on APC so people have a better idea of the reality of the current situation. If and when demand comes back and UA wants more 550 flying, not only will GJ's current fleet get fully utilized (by GJ, for UA), but Mesa and Skywest are not the only sources of used 700's to convert to 550's. Now this of course assumes GJ stays financially viable, which can only be accomplished by downsizing at this point in time. Many people on here worried about the fates of various regionals they work for including myself. All we can do is deal with current facts and situations, knowing anything can change on a daily basis and nothing is guaranteed in this environment. But rampant speculation and misinformation, although sometimes entertaining, is not always a good thing.

He built Mesa by buying out struggling airlines and turning them around. Wouldn't put it past him to be talking with Hulas right now about a buy out. Uncle Hulas is pretty old and has already lost two out of three.

Word on the street is Awac is actively and aggressively ramping up a 700 Operation ,manuals , buying sim time and the whole 9 . They are getting them from somewhere evidently. Exactly where remains to be seen .
One can only speculate at this point .
