I don't know LJ's source but pretty much all of this is in news releases.
On May 13th there was an article where Skywest stated they had been approached about the 550 and stated it was very "compelling". Everyone's first thought of course is "compelling" in what way? But it was clear that United wanted them to do 550 flying and they were considering it.
Skywest is putting through 130 pilots a month in training with classes full until 2020 and is losing about 60 so they have a gain of 70. 70 pilots covers 7 new planes per month at the standard 10 pilots per plane. They are only getting another 3 planes this year net. Obviously they have plans to do more flying.
GJ has started losing the DL planes and has 5 parked the United side as of last week. Someone posted pilot hours and pay is way down. I imagine guys will leave. GJ pays 50K+/- to go there and is barely maintaining their pilot number. Skywest pays zero bonus and is gaining 70 a month. I don't think its difficult to understand why United doesn't think GJ will be able to fly all the planes. These are supposed to be premium seats, not "If we can find a pilot to fly them" seats.
The SW first quarter report referenced that the deal to lease the planes to GJ depended upon regulatory and contractural agreements of third parties. That means GJ and United still only have their "letter of intent" which is meaningless.
If I wanted to fly the 550 and get that beverage bar, I would apply to Skywest for the best odds.

I did. I was offered a bunch of dates starting in July. I had to defer until September. I'm still waiting for my on boarding paperwork work and PRIA. I've asked my recruiter about it several times with no real answer as to when I'll get it. My offer letter said I would get it in an email from Paycor. That's was in the beginning of June. Not sure if they're just waiting until it's closer to my class date or what.
