This is stupid!! Observation flights are a requirement, your commute is not. As simple as that. The training requirement encourages the new hires to do as many observation flights as possible, and being in training one gets the perk or positive travel as much as possible to include commuting and as said before it is encouraged by the training department.
Don't take it out on the new guys. Most probably don't even know how to check loads yet. It's a "tiny" perk considering first year pay is crap to say the least and no paid lodging during training. So if they use positive space to travel back and forth during training get over it and stop trying to dictate your own policy.

Lakeshore, you are being an ass. You are a brand new pilot at Frontier and you are picking fights with senior pilots whom you might one day end up flying with.
I was the one who originally brought this topic up because back in August when 8 captains were trying to get back home from Chicago to Denver we were bumped by 2 new hires off of the jumpseat of subsequent flights. What was most irritating was that the 2 afternoon flights were oversold and had non revs listed while the morning flight had plenty of open seats yet the newhires chose to take the later flights, AND THUS KNOWINGLY BUMP senior non revs off of the flight.
Grow up and stop acting like a child.
They, the newhires, were given the jumpseat on the flights and bumped senior employees off of the flights. About 5 Frontier pilots had to get to Denver on other airlines. So your accusation that the positive space jumpseats are only positive space if no one else wants it is flat out false.

My question here is why didn't the 5 frontier pilots check loads and realize that they should have taken the empty flight, instead of being hurt because a new guy was on positive space? If I'm commuting I don't try for the full flight. The new hires just don't show up at the airport and request positive space, it's usually done days in advance.

Positive space JS?
BS, it's my jumpseat, the FARS allowing it should read by the new guys AND the training department. Commuters first and always. Show some respect, some new hire shows up with even a whiff of attitude like that uttered by some posters here and buh-bye!....the CPO CAN BE-LOW me. It's a simple as that....welcome to F9.

Things with the positive space ride are getting blown out of proportion now. Plain and simple, no positive space between our two hubs (ORD,MCO) and DEN. That is all! Captain denies a positive space ride then he will have some explaining to do to Chief pilot.
Time to give it a rest everybody!

I agree with you completely. Be careful though, if you mention anything about first year pay to many of our senior CA, they'll promptly tell you how they took pay cuts so you could have a job and how they've been making next to nothing for years. This will be followed by discussions of their boats/airplanes/2 houses and of course, the massive IPO payout they're expecting. You may also get a lecture about paying your dues as an FO, despite the fact they upgraded in 6-12 months.

Let's not forget the guys that go out of their way to remind folks not to gloat (and nobody does) about only sitting reserve for two months or upgrading in two years. Right. Your 8 year stint being a junior FO at Frontier was really tragic. Surely Frontier was the only airline stagnating/failing during the recession, right? Surely the person you're lecturing wasn't stuck at a crappy regional, 135, or worse making peanuts that entire time. If you were lucky enough to ride out the recession at Frontier making a livable wage then you are the fortunate one. Have a little respect and mind your own business. This isn't the era of Great Lakes where mommy and daddy subsidized your career for 2-3 years until F9 hired you. Most of the newhires I know have a decade+ experience.
Most of our Captains were all cozy and snug in their Denver base as line holders while the rest of us schlepped our way to Milwaukee and then Chicago as reserves for years at a time. This stems from the senior FAPA leadership at the time, they never cared about the junior pilot at F9. I'm not sure they even do now.
Don't get me started...
