And was paid...

Yeah, not sure why anyone would take UNPAID leave... Unless you REALLY want to do something that requires a month off.

The company drew back flying in this time period, it isn't our problem to fix it for them.

You'd be surprised how many people will take an unpaid leave.

There's always people in the middle of a house renovation, people trying to go spend a month in Asia, or people needing to move their elderly parents out of their home and get it ready to sell. People want the time off

Sit reserve in SJU for 18 days spending 2000$ on hotels and food or travel across Europe for a month.

It's a win win for company and employee. No one is fixing the company's problem.

Are you really "spending $2000 a month" when you are also getting paid? It is not a break even situation. Even by "saving" $2000 a month on hotels, you are still making far more than you are spending. Taking the month off is a massive net loss.

One of the mind boggling things about this profession is that in any other career with this kind of earning potential, the professionals aren’t too stubborn to accept that it fundamentally IS their problem when a decline in business makes them redundant.

This “me versus the company” attitude is just tiresome and beyond childish.

Time also has an intrinsic value that varies from person to person. When I first started and was commuting I was dropping to the absolute min I could every month because it wasn’t worth my time to go to work. Granted the hourly rate was a bit lower then. If they had put any monetary incentive on it greater than zero I would have signed right up.

Again it just comes down to what motivates a person to take the time off. My buddy took the whole summer off unpaid from his carrier to go fly for a lodge in Alaska. ******* off to the bush for a few months to fly a beaver on floats, all while getting to keep the airline seniority number when you come back. I'd do that in a heartbeat if I could.

At real airlines at least, doing that now would mean that you are gaining a few extra days off now, but at a serious long term cost.

Personally, Id rather work the summer, pocket $50k per month with all of the green slip trips, and buy an airplane and take a 2 week vacation at the same lodge the following summer, while also putting an extra $20k into retirement. But ya...to each his own. Short term gains for long term losses.
