Default Next Base ?

Heard that our next new base will be West Coast. So choices I could see as of now. ONT, SFO, sAN or PDX. We’ve really expanded in all of those cities and have our own dedicated gate in PDX now.

I’ve been in and out of ONT and SFO a lot and those have been pretty full.

Thoughts ?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t CA have some pretty strict work rules when it comes to required uninterrupted breaks and what not for those based in Cali? I’d be curious to see how we would comply with that with our already tight turn arounds.

It's my understanding that California has some pretty burdensome labor laws that could squelch any interest in opening a base there. I haven't researched it to any extent, but I guess there's a chance airlines could be exempt or maybe partially exempt from state laws because Federal laws have already spelled out maximum workday hours, rest hours, etc.

I would guess we'd have enough folks excited about a California base that staffing wouldn't be a problem.

There’s been some recent legislation addressing the issue. Basically a carveout exemption for flight crew assuming there’s no cba language.

There has not been a new, "created from zero" crew base by any airline in California in many years. Maybe Avelo or Breeze but major 121 airline, ULCC included, is none.

This is due to California labor laws, specifically maternity leave, and some other "pro worker rights" stuff.

I missed the carve out portion of the rules.

I have heard the two west coast bases rumor as well. Besides our current or pending bases cities with leading ops are…

14. SFO
15. RDU
16. CUN
17. ONT
18. SAN
19. BWI
20. SLC

With the upcoming furloughs I can't imagine new bases opening up anytime soon.

I definitely think we will see SFO or ONT? Something with our own gates or plenty of them. Whatever it is, seeing west coast bases means we will see a nice seniority spread across the system again.
