Contract 2023
#231
Please God give us beards in the new contract 🙏 . Amen.
Mostly sarcasm but I do hate shaving everyday. Plus I don't look like a child when I have a beard. Can't imagine that in today's day and age that pilots with beards hurt the company image. Also been shown it doesn't affect safety.

A yes from me. But unfortunately every time I’ve seen jt brought up, always the same opposition. Image/professionalism; safety; can’t JS on other carriers; Company X allows it and so few did it in the beginning so those brave few went back to daily shaving due to feeling awkward.
Sure it’s not really a safety issue but good luck getting the FAA to change their minds (or all those oxygen masks with the placard about a proper seal). It can be groomed and maintained professionally; if there can be a dress code and grooming standard for hair and mustache, obviously a simple beard standard could be enacted. If you anticipate needing to ride a JS, carry a shaver and do a quick pass. There’s not really a reason for people to wear suits and ties. Not really a reason we need to look like a boat captain. Delta actually truly thinks the double breasted/hat combo is what their passengers are paying to see and expect.
groomed facial hair. Better reserve rules/pay. Min daily instead of duty period. Mainline narrowbody pay rates. Keep the hat optional. 5 things and I’m happy.

Im not saying they would block it. But their official/unofficial stance has been it is some sort of hazard and interferes. All the cockpit masks I’ve seen have a placard of some sort. Standard liability waiver from the manufacturer. But I’ve seen it somewhere that FAA still considers it to interfere with a seal. Last I heard you can’t have facial hair in OKC for the hypoxia test chambers.
Ultimately it gets axed due to “it interferes with a seal” but deep down, it’s because a vocal majority thinks it’s unprofessional and can’t be policed. Which is why I say: if they can mandate a uniform and mustaches and hair length, it would be easy to do the same for a groomed beard. It’s not like people are asking for a Duck Dynasty beard.

I just saw one of our own walking through the terminal with shirt and pants tailored so tight that they were basically painted on, pants hemmed so high I could see half of his sock, shirt sleeves made so short they were practically in his armpits and fuzzy black loafers with white soles on his feet. He looked liked he enjoyed his protein shakes and he also looked like a complete clown. He was dressed like he was going to work a bachelorette party, not a professional airline captain about to go fly a plane.
I don’t shave on my days off and I like it, but I’m a hard no on beards at work.

We can’t get half of this pilot group to wear a uniform respectfully. Furthermore the company seems to have no interest in enforcing it. Do you really think, if allowed, anyone would keep a beard groomed professionally? I have one month of pay that says pilots would be having beard growing contests.

Wjy do we expect THIS company (mgt) to enforce anything associated with professionalism, pride, etc. The fact is that WE the labor force should enforce it - or at least pull a guy/gal aside and tactfully request that they do better. It’s not a scolding, it’s mentorship and age has nothing to do with it.
The reason why we have people looking like clowns is because we don’t say anything. The reason why we have this pay scale and contract is because WE (not the union leadership) voted it in.

I know this won’t be the sentiment for many but…
