How do reserve pilots have an unfair advantage? They have fewer days off than line pilots, and their latest release time must be considered when adding trips. I can’t wait for the flying to return so all the people whining about open time and trying to throw reserve pilots under the bus, can start *****ing that there is too much open time and they can’t drop anything because the grid is all clogged up.
why don’t we put a 2-4 hour block on line pilot adds so reserves can have the opportunity to improve their schedules since they are at the mercy of the company? Seems about as arbitrary as doing the same thing to the reserve pilots.

This is why I mentioned you need to look beyond the current situation. There’s going to be plenty of opentime in the near future and it going to get more difficult for res to add flying. Some people just can’t see past today.

The big picture with it is this. Enough people have complained about it that the mec has noticed. Now when that happens they have to do something about it or it could turn into a failure to represent problem. The nuclear option is get rid of it altogether. Bad idea for many reasons. The other option is do nothing. The middle ground is a 10-20 min block. That’s where we’re at with it. Just weigh in with the survey so they can get an accurate picture.

Except in rare cases. Friend was a senior CA with TWA. Less than 10 min from STL. Every other June he painted his house. Bid reserve. Only one or two turns a month.
He could be off the ladder, paint brush to soak, shower, change and be out the door in less than an hour. Gave him pretty much the entire month to do the work.
Like I said, works in rare cases.

The reserve system needs an overhaul and not by people who haven’t seen it in 15 years. We probably have a few of the worst rules I have flown under. First in-First out is one of the most garbage systems I have seen, so yes he has a point. If a guy wants to bid reserve knowing he is senior enough not to fly, why not?

If you commute, you want to fly a lot on reserve, so you don't spend time in a crashpad or spend money on hotels.
If you live in base, you don't want to fly a lot on reserve, you get more time at home.
If you commute, flying a lot on reserve isn't so bad, kind of like having a line that you can't choose.
If you live in base, flying a lot on reserve is definitely worse than a line holder, less days off and unpredictable schedule.
If you are a pilot for the paycheck, you want 90 hours and pick up open time.
If you are a pilot for the lifestyle, you want to be able to drop to 0 and take that 30 day cruise.
The point is everyone is different, and nobody is ever going to be completely happy.
Tampa opened up yesterday, I wonder how its going, being the only domicile that is not a majors hub?
