Rumor is 6, maybe more, new hires got section 19'd last week. Sent home just before being signed off for check ride and sat in the dark for 3-4 weeks while training/ST and JO decided what to do with them, until last week's Sec 19 hearings, and last I heard they're still waiting on their decision. Seems our training department has been on the decline for awhile. Not like we can afford to let new hires go.

That really sucks for them. If the company is waiting 3-4 weeks for a decision I’d imagine that their flying skills would deteriorate to the point of needing more training to get signed off again. Are they being 19’d because of poor performance? Or attitude ?
I get to work with a lot of new guys, most are great but some don’t seem to care much either.

Section 19 for poor performance in training? I’m not an ALPA expert but I don’t think that’s what section 19s are for.

More to this story, or something is getting lost in translation, or more misinformation.

Agreed. I’ve heard some are having trouble in training and washing out but that was to be expected. But I hear that from every airline.

That doesn't sound right at all. If any section 19 happened, It would be because of some sort of social media fiasco like crispy and his class mates back last year... I heard they got a STERN talking to in their ground class from the higher ups.

If you wash out, I am pretty sure its just a wash out type firing and not an actual 19.

There's a gray area you can enter where you haven't failed out of training but you also can't get an instructor to sign you off. In those cases, management has to decide what to do with you. I know a few people have fallen into that gray area but I know nothing about any section 19s.

A section 19 is a fact finding "investigation", it can obviously lead to discipline or termination but rarely does

I personally know a F9 FO in his first year who did his sims in Vegas as part of his initial new hire training (he bid for it instead of staying in Denver after indoc). That’s where the question is coming from.

Sounded strange to me when I heard it, but I've spoken with 2 FOs this week who have friends going through it right now. Union was in the meeting, union rep told one this was the first time they've been to a 19 for training, hoping somebody with actual information pipes in.

It depends how many new hires need sims. We send new hires primarily to DEN and MCO these days. Ever since we started sending people to MCO there hasn’t been much need for LAS or MIA slots to be offered. We don’t own any of the sims outside the one or two in DEN so I’m sure the company only uses LAS when they absolutely have no other choice.

A pilot that hasn’t passed their probationary proficiency check does not have full union protection. But the company tends to treat them as if they do and allows union representation during meetings between pilots and managemnt. Regardless, the term “Section 19” is probably being used as a catchall phrase in this instance and the outcome of that “investigation” is based solely on the decisions of management. Fact is, if you have problems during your first year (training, dependability, behavioral, flying skills, etc) you’ll be talking to management and they alone will decide if you are to remain an employee or be terminated.
