Default New bases

I've been following this form for a little bit. And been wondering if you guys were going to get new bases. And the two bases that people always speculate are Raleigh-Durham and Austin. However spirit is now servicing Austin and they're going to start servicing Raleigh-Durham in May. I would think it's spirit is now going into these two airports. That management at Frontier would probably not open bases in Raleigh-Durham or Austin. What are your thoughts?

Most times, or at least for the last few years, any base rumor that comes out of mouths in Denver is about a full year off from their projected dates. I’ve heard two more bases in 2019, but I’d be shocked if we even see one more base in 2019. If we do see one more I think it’ll come at the very end of the year. This airline regularly goes from hot to cold on focus cities that people speculate could be a base. Some cities we thought could have been a base include PDX, PHX, COS, CVG, CLE, STL, and I’m sure there are others I’m forgetting. These cities were HOT at one time, then Frontier went cold on them. It takes several years of sustained (12+ routes) service for this airline to consider a pilot base. I don’t know if the new contract allows them any new flexibility, it’s possible. But every current pilot base in our system is as I just described, except ORD, we’ve sustained a high level of routes from those cities for several years.

We had many people coming to this airline for the last 3 years for a Philly base that was “just about to be announced.” I know several people who waited 2+ years longer than they expected for that to happen.

I would be cautious about placing bets on when the next pilot base will open and where it will be.

Straight from the mouths in crew planning... the emphasis moving forward will be on turns and not multi day pairings.

I certainly noticed that for PHL, as far as the bid pack goes.

Haha. Give us a contract and then build mostly turns. Sick burn!

Hearing a few rumors lately of Chicago closing. Would make sense given T5 and overall lack of growth, plus tough competition.

Oh yeah, every time I run into DEN types they say that.....although DEN is the only base we’ve consistently downsized in the past 5 years........odd.......

I haven’t heard that one. ORD is the smallest but they are almost always full to and from. I think we open new bases before we close ORD

Why would they close ORD? I could understand them not growing it too much while ramping up other bases (and the favorite excuse of gate space), but we still run 10-11 flights per day out of there and they are always full. If the base closed and the flying got put into pairings from a different base, it would feel like we do more Chicago flying.

They have PHL. They can one leg deadhead to ORD. PHL is more of a useful base then ORD. Will they close ORD? Doubt it but I bet it will get cut in half.
