How about calling in sick on reserve? Do you call in sick for one day at a time or a set of reserve days?

Up to You. Either way is fine. My personal rule on that was normally 1 at a time, sometimes 2 or 3, did 4 once I believe? can't remember? Anything more than that would be if I had that ace in hole I described. Especially right now.

Completely agree. In the past we have had pilots hang themselves on the phone ("I cut my thumb off" or "my wife has a doctors app"). The contract gives several reasons you can use sick time. Familty members being sick is just one. It also gives reasons you CANT use sick time (doctors app.). Better to be familiar when making the phone call and keep it short (DONT offer an explination).

FMLA is really the best deal in applying sick time. Its a bit of a pain in the arse initially with the paperwork but after that theres several benefits. It can't be questioned by the company. Period. You can use vac or sick to cover missed duty periods. Elect not to be paid for duty periods (think of the low credit duty periods you have). Why would you apply sick or vacation to a duty period of less than 3 hrs? Lets just take an example of applying FMLA to 2 four day trips. First I'm going to peal 1 vacation day off of each block of 7 (I have 4) and apply them to the 4 highest credit duty periods I have dropped (leaves me 4 blocks of 6). Then I'm going to look at what duty periods are left and if any of them are less than 3 hrs I'm forgoing the pay. Then I'm applying sick to whatever is left over 3 hrs (lets say 2). So in the end I've dropped 40-48 credit with 2 sick days and left myself with my vacation basically intact to drop 2 four day trips each time I apply it. Also, if i believe that I'm not even going to get a vac (I'm jr and the company doesn't stop taking it) I can use it this way. I know its not ideal and I would rather actually have vac but at least I'm actually using it and its paying more than the company will be. Another option for someone. Ill do this till I'm down to 4 blocks of 5 day vac periods then just tap into a whole block. Your accruing sick the whole time and vac for the time your electing to be paid for. One word of caution when doing this. If you don't elect to be paid for an entire sequence make sure theres no trip rig as it will be considered pilot modified.

The family member doesn't have to be sick. The contract language just says "to care for..."

Dare I say we might see a TA next week? With all these labor contracts that are being wrapped up lately, my gut says we are getting close to a sale.
