I have another theory. This is straight out of the Frank Lorenzo playbook. It’s cheaper to pay a few guys a lot extra for open flying than it is to be properly staffed and DEFINITELY cheaper than a new contract. At the same time, it’s a great way to divide the pilots. Most guys are starting to realize that incentivized and JA trips may help in the short term but they keep us in this negotiation longer as the pressure on the company is relieved. Others, however, do not see this and jump all over it. This keeps the fires put out and also frustrates the majority of the pilots. For the company it’s a win-win.
It's also much cheaper to pay the pilots industry standard for one flight than to cancel the flight. They are getting a deep discount about 95% of the time after all.

Someone more familiar could give more accurate dates but if I understand it NK had their last scheduled negotiations session in Feb 2010. Then a mandatory 2 day session in April 2010. And finally a notice of release to cooling off on May 12th. I’m not sure where the proffer dropped in that timeline.
My best guess now for us is Spring as well. There’s a narrow window after the summer rush leading to the holiday rush and the midterm elections are holding all the political attention during that time.

This lull led me to revisit the “Spirit of NKS” thread. Its pretty interesting to read through it starting around January 2010 (somewhere around page 200 I think). You could copy/paste the posts there onto our thread. Same infuriating mgt proposals. Same frustrating delays. Same venting about LOAs, open time etc.
