I have been at NetJets for almost six months. Like I said, it is a GREAT company with exellent benefits, but the major issue I had when it came down to a choice between SWA and NJ was the domicile drive. Granted, I took the job knowing that, but at that time SWA hadn't called yet.
I plan on leaving NJ through the front door. I have to ask for the first week of Jan off to get my 737 type. (I'm on the 7/7 sched) I plan on telling the CP that info next monday.
Do you know what NJ will do once the "Cat is out of the bag"?? I figured if they were going to ask me to resign once they found out I might as well spend Christmas with my family. If they give me the time off to get my type and let me continue working until my two weeks notice to go to SWA then that is great too.
Any thoughts you have will be greatly appreciated NJ Capt....thanks.

By the way to all the NJA guys, please don't think that I am leaving because I am disgruntled with the company. I will miss this flying trust me. It is just that SWA is going to give me a little bit better quality of life for my family.
I am greatful to have flown with NJA and will remember the flying there for a long time. Good people, good company.

harley,
Its just me, but I'd get your type using DNIF days, the compnay has always said these are days to be used at your discretion, they don't ask, and don't want to know why you are using them, this is why a DR. note isn't required. Take the week of you need and then feel free to give your 2 weeks notice. I am glad you enjoyed your time at NJA, but you owe nothing to anyone but yourslef and family. I'd play it safe and make sure you stay employed until your ready to leave for SWA.

I'd do as jmack says by using the sick days that you should have saved up by January to get the time you need off. If I were the Chief Pilot and you asked me to help you leave by giving you the time off, I would probably fire you since you are still on probation and want to leave anyway. I'm under the impression (but could be wrong) that you need the type to get the interview which would mean you don't even have an interview offer yet. DO NOT screw up a good job you already have now for the possibility of a better job. They can't prove you weren't sick and fire you. Once you know you have the job, then give them as much notice as possible and tell them why you left to drive the point home about the current domicile issue. Also, depending on your base versus where you live for jumping home, you may very well be spending more than your current 7 hours commuting to and from work since you will have to go through security and hope for open seats/ jumpseat and usually have to give yourself at least one backup flight to get to work. Good luck whatever you decide.

Thanks much for the advice guys...
JTF560, I already got hired with SWA but need the type to start my training date. That is why the class has to take priority right now. I just want to do the right thing here, and I guess you answered my question when you said the CP would probably want me gone immediately if they knew.
I agree with most of the points you made, but I won't be on the road driving a car half asleep at 0230 in the morning if I am jumpseating. (I know, the hotel on my dime would be the smart choice, but you ALL know after being gone seven days we all just want to GET home!) I do appreciate you and Jmack's inputs. You folks at NJA are good people. Thank you.

Harley,
I am in a very similar situation, however I won't need to attend a type rating course prior to my new employment.
I'm at NetJets too, and I've just found out that I'm in the hiring pool at UPS. I feel like you do about NetJets; great company, outstanding benefits, and nice people. The whole domicile situation for me hasn't been as much an issue as it has been for you. Since I only have a 2 hour drive to my domicile, I don't have much room to complain.
Concerning your 737 type course for SWA....I definitely would not ask the CP for a week off....bad move. Like someone else said, use your sick days (they're your days), and your normal 7 days off to complete the course. The idea of giving two weeks notice for your resignation is nice, but definitely not required. I don't think that they'd tell you your resignation is effective immediately, but there is nothing stopping them from doing so. Personally, I'd collect a paycheck, and keep my medical/dental insurance up to the day before I started SWA if I were you.
Good luck.

Dang, you guys are going to be getting out and you are junior to me. How about you guys do your best to convince a bunch of captains here to go with you so I can move up. I don't have any friends at UPS, Fedex, or SWA (the only other places I'd consider) so I am planning a long career here and captain ASAP would be great. Congrats on getting what you wanted.
