We just don't know all of the circumstances. If there was a battery overheat, I'm not wasting any time. I'm going to land. A NiCad thermal runaway is a major emergency.
I'm sure there are good reasons as to why they chose the airport they chose. If your NiCad battery is having a thermal meltdown (yes, their's did), then 14 miles on one engine with limited emergency power with a possible fire burning a hole in the rear of the airplane may be a long way to go. And when your battery has a thermal runaway, that 30 minutes of emer electrical power from your battery that FAR 25 promises you...well, it suddenly doesn't exist.

One of our batteries had a thermal runaway in our maintenance facility while being charged. Our mechanic had seconds to get it outside to the hose before it would have melted. SOmetimes its not a matter of munutes, but seconds. Its easy playing monday morning quarterback until we are in the seat with it happening to us. Never the less....good job guys.
