Default Fractional pilot travelling tips?

Hey guys,

A few questions for ya.

How do you guys coordinate your bags with regards to travelling to your aircraft and then back home?

Do you check your roller board, and take your kit bag with you onboard?

Do you take both onboard? How about if you have a laptop in a separate bag? Now we're talking 3 bags...

Also, do you travel in full uniform or incognito?

Just a few questions from a Regional guy looking at getting into the Fractional world. When you're commuting and/or deadheading on company aircraft, you never have to worry about taking all your bags onboard.

Thanks guys.

First of all, the uniform...we're supposed to travel in uniform because the schedule can change on a moment's notice and you need to be prepared to fly a trip.

We don't carry kit bags, per se. The Jepps and headsets are onboard the airplanes. All we're required to carry is the FOM, which fits nicely in my computer bag, along with passport, custom forms, etc. I usually check my rollerboard.

I carry both my bags on with me (laptop included). All our pubs are on the plane (EFBs). CS wants you to airline to the plane in uniform; they don't really care about on your way home.

Ahhh, EFB's. I wasnt aware that you guys used those....very nice! If no kit bag...that helps tremendously. I hate waiting for checked bags and I know how they get treated as well.

Thanks guys!

It sure will be nice to use EFBs, I'm tired of carrying all those Jepps around.

Never check anything on the way to work. Travel in uniform on the way to work.

On the way home, I check my bag if I go to the airport in civies. Sometimes, if there is no rush, I'll clear security and then change on the way home.

I don't abide by the liquid/gel limitations and that is why I try to check in wearing my uniform. In a very few places, TSA has hassled me because I'm not 121, but that is rare.

I checked my roller bag once and United broke a zipper. Never again.

I wore civilian clothes once and the TSA gave me a bunch of hassle about liquids and whatnot. Never again.

I bring it all and wear the uniform. If I'm heading home I'll wear the uniform to the gate and then slip into a bathroom and put on a polo shirt. Plus that way I can have a well deserved drink on the way home.

Flexjet specifically tells pilots NOT to check bags on outbound flight; if you fly the airplines to EWR, and when the bag arrives 3 hours later you are in TPA, the airline will not have a strong desire to transport it!

Never check anything you might want to see again during your tour! Always at least go through security in uniform, it just makes it easier...
