Ya my captain hasn't flown over there in a while, but he does know what he's doin (20,000 hours+ time) and flown over there a lot previously. We found out that there is a certain route through canada and greenland that will not require the HF radios. We have a company setting up all of the arrangements, but not sure of the company. The route will be something like: LA-OKC-NY-Canada-Greenland-Iceland- Scottland?-and then London. I can't wait for this and have been studying my plane inside and out. will let you know how it went and my experiences.

Not sure about the UHF requirements either. Mine was down both times but was able to get PTAPTP reports relayed by Big Guys fairly regularly. But it gets aweful quiet n lonely out there when no one's around! So get ahold of one if you can.
Unfortunately, I cant find my route of flight gouge right now but, check out www.baseops.net. They have great stopover gouge and maybe even some ROF suggestions.

As for the rest of it, I did my last trip just over a year ago and everything everyone else has said is on the mark as of then!
Have fun, fly casual!

Does anyone know if you need an HF Radio to fly from St Johns to the Azores?

Gas to get there isn't close to enough.
You need to get there, get somewhere else and then have at least an hour more IMHO. You are way off the reservation if something went downhill and you started running short on gas.
The only time you have too much gas onboard, is when you're on fire!

Also, one has to factor the wet foot print in all of this

Hint on the wet footprint, it's 1500nm, Gander to Santa Maria, can your plane go 750nm at 10,000 or enough oxygen to go that distance at something below F250 accounting for the winds and reserves. There are really only two good airports there LPAZ and LPLA. There are some others, but much less used by international flights. Porto Delgado (LPPD)I haven't been to, but it is an airline airport. Flores is the westernmost airport, 1200nm from Gander.
