Be prepared to fly with some captains who are against ordering crew meals and GPU's. Company states that we the pilots are the "face" of the company. Blows my mind to see some captains put up a hissy fit about getting a GPU on a hot summer day in South Florida. If I paid a buy in fee of $300,000+ I'd sure hope the crew would attempt to cool down the plane. As far as the training contract goes... I know atleast 3 people who have quit within the first 1-5 months of their hire date and did not get pentalized for it. If you're really worried about it. Just go to a regional that offers a bonus.
As for the GPU, many FBOs don't charge for it or won't charge with fuel purchase. So maybe next time ask the front desk what the deal is, and if the Captain says he doesn't want one, you might be able to sway his/her decision if its free. However, sometimes the Captain might have a little prior knowledge that getting a GPU is near impossible or more trouble than its worth (think ACK). Getting a GPU and keeping the plane cool isn't just about passenger comfort, it's also about crew performance and fatigue. A long day back and forth to the islands and the crew being more comfortable and therefore able to perform their jobs better, is in the best interest of the company.

I'll chime in and say there are numerous factors to getting a GPU or not. However, the VCCS just doesn't do a very good job of cooling the plane down on GPU. Depending on which airport and FBO you are at, it can be way more of a hassle than it's worth, especially for a few degrees. Expediency on departure is always a big priority...

Merit based upgrades are determined by seniority, recommendations by captains, standing with the company, and total flight time. The shortest upgrade I have heard of was 3 months.
The company has hired direct entry captains in the past. They probably would again if conditions dictate, but they obviously want to promote from within.

No meals are provided during training. I think they bought us pizza the first day of class and then ordered sandwiches for us the last day of class before heading off to sims. Every morning they bring donuts and coffee to class. Rumor has it that the last new hire class got yelled at for eating all the free food and beer at the Hampton inn from management. There is a grocery store about .3 miles from the hampton inn where you can go and get food.

Yeah I agree, But when you are at any Atlantic or somewhere down south in Florida there is no excuse to get one. Especially when you have an hour turn and its free with a fuel purchases or 30min free. There are those few CA here who refuse to get the GPU's or crew meals. Must be nice to be PSM based and being able to pack a cooler and not have to go through TSA.
